The Durban International Book Fair will be hosted by the Durban Book Fair, a non-profit organisation, dedicated to the promotion of literature and a reading culture in Africa’s only UNESCO city of literature. The Durban Book Fair’s track record is indeed a stellar one, boasting more than 180 new books launched over 4 years despite the Covid-19 interruption.
The Durban Book Fair provides a free platform for writers, academics and publishers to launch and market their work to diverse audiences including children. There is currently a void on the African continent with the bulk of book fairs having ground to a halt due to the challenges of funding and the pandemic. In addition, scholastic and academic publishers have been unable to physically market books to schools and universities. Informed by the above context, the Durban International Book Fair will host a five day literary event from 1 to 5 August 2022 at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom with a special focus on women in literature; the promotion of indigenous languages and academic publishing.
The anticipated audience over five days is 5000 with an additional global audience via social media and online platforms. The anticipated headline guest author is Professor Abdulrazak Gurnah of Tanzania, the 2021 Nobel Laureate in Literature.
